Am I at Risk of Getting the Flu This Year?
Unfortunately, it’s likely that your risk of getting the flu is higher this year compared to last year, due to the high flu rates in our state. Plus, less social distancing and reduced mask-wearing will increase your flu risk.
Even though flu risk is higher this year, there are still lots of ways you can stay safe this winter! Read on as our AFC Urgent Care Easley team highlights what to know about the virus and how you can prevent yourself from getting it.
What Is the Flu?
The flu is caused by influenza viruses, which attack the respiratory system.
Oftentimes, the flu can be mistaken as a common cold, but there are several differentiating factors that separate the flu from a common cold, such as the presence of a fever, body aches and extreme fatigue. We’ve listed the common flu symptoms you need to be aware of below.
Common Flu Symptoms
- Fever
- Aches and pains throughout the body
- Headaches
- Chills
- Sore throat
- An extreme feeling of fatigue
- A persistent and worsening cough
- Stuffy or runny nose
How Can I Avoid the Flu This Winter?
The best way to prevent the flu is by getting the annual flu vaccine. While the vaccine doesn’t 100% keep you safe from the flu, it offers meaningful protection. Plus, if you do get sick from the flu, it significantly lowers your risk of dealing with serious complications.
In addition to getting the flu vaccine, we’ve listed some effective ways to stay healthy this winter below.
How to Stay Healthy This Winter
- Wash your hands thoroughly and often.
- Wear a mask in public spaces.
- Stay at home and away from others when you are sick to prevent catching and transmitting illness and potential virus.
