Should I Consider Taking My Child to Get an X-ray?

No matter the time of year, injuries happen! However, injuries that require an X-ray seem to be a bit more common during the summer months.

If your child has sustained an injury, it could be time to consider taking him or her to get an X-ray. Our team at AFC Urgent Care Easley walks you through how to know if your child needs one or not below!

What Is an X-Ray?

An X-ray is a common imaging test that uses a small amount of radiation to create pictures of the inside of the body. The images show the parts of the body in different shades of black and white. X-rays have been used for decades, and they help doctors view the inside of the body without having to make an incision, which can help diagnose, monitor and treat all sorts of medical conditions.

There are several different types of X-rays that are used for different purposes. The most common type of X-ray, though, is the bone X-ray. We’ve listed some other conditions that might constitute getting an X-ray below.

Other Reasons for Getting an X-ray

  • Bone cancer
  • Blocked blood vessels
  • Conditions affecting the lungs
  • Fractures
  • Osteoporosis
  • Arthritis
  • Tooth decay
  • Needing to retrieve swallowed items

How Will I Know If My Child Needs One?

While some rolled ankles and knee sprains may only need rest and ice to heal, other injuries are more serious.
