What Does Social Distancing Mean?

At this point, it probably feels like you’ve heard the phrase “social distancing” approximately a million times. But do you really have a good understanding of what it means?

Maintaining social distance is one key to preventing the spread of COVID-19, which is why our team at AFC Urgent Care Easley wants to take a few minutes to break down what that means. Read on to learn more.

Why Is Social Distancing Important?

Let’s first talk about what social distancing is. While it’s commonly called social distancing, it’s easier to understand if you think of it as physical distancing.

It’s all about putting physical space between yourself and others, which makes it less likely you’ll come into contact with someone else’s airborne particles. Experts recommend keeping at least six feet between yourself and others at all times when out in public. There are some key visual cues that can help you know what that is.

What Six Feet Looks Like

  • Height of your refrigerator
  • Length of two back-to-back grocery carts
  • Width of the average car

What Else Can I Do to Lower My Risk?

Maintaining good social distance is a good first step, but there are other best practices you should also follow. Your best bet is still to remain in your home as much as possible.

But if you need to be out and about, you’ll want to follow the basic precautions outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

How to Prevent COVID-19

  • Steer clear of large gatherings or crowds.
  • If age 2 or older, wear a cloth face mask around others.
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds at a time.
  • Disinfect commonly touched surfaces and objects often.
  • Don’t touch your face with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid contact with anyone exhibiting symptoms.

If you believe you have been exposed to COVID-19, we are offering COVID-19 testing at our urgent care center. Visit the AFC Urgent Care Easley website to learn more or to schedule a testing appointment.
